How to Make These Seasonal Beauties Last Longer
1. Unwrap and Refresh
As soon as your peonies arrive, unwrap them carefully and remove any packaging or water pods. Give the stems a fresh diagonal cut (about 2–3cm from the bottom) using sharp scissors or a knife. This allows them to better absorb water and nutrients, keeping them hydrated and vibrant.
2. Choose the Right Vase
Select a clean vase and fill it with cool, fresh water. Peonies are top-heavy, so a medium-to-tall vase works best to support their full blooms.
3. Trim and Refresh Regularly
Every two days, trim the stems slightly and replace the water completely. Peonies love clean, fresh water. Wipe down the vase before refilling to remove any build-up that could shorten the flowers’ lifespan.
4. Keep Them Cool
Peonies prefer cooler conditions. Avoid placing them near direct sunlight, heaters, or draughty areas. If you want to slow their blooming for a special occasion, you can even store them in a cool spot overnight.
5. Enjoy the Blooming Process
Part of the magic of peonies is watching them transform. They often arrive in tight buds, don’t worry, they’ll open beautifully within a day or two. If you’d like to speed things up, place them in a warmer room and gently loosen the outer petals with your fingers.
A Short Season Worth Celebrating
Peonies are fleeting, that’s part of what makes them so special. Their short season, typically from late October to December in New Zealand, is a moment to savour. Whether you’re gifting them or enjoying them at home, these blooms remind us to pause, appreciate beauty and celebrate life’s seasonal joys.
