Want your flowers to last longer?
Fresh flowers have the power to brighten a room, lift your mood, and make everyday moments feel special. But sometimes blooms start to wilt sooner than expected.
We asked our floral experts to share the most common mistakes people make when caring for their flowers and what you can do instead to keep your bouquet looking beautiful for longer.
Avoid these four common mistakes and your blooms will stay fresher for days.

1. Leaving Foliage Below the Water Line
One of the most common mistakes is leaving leaves sitting in the vase water.
When foliage is submerged, it quickly begins to rot. This creates bacteria in the water, which blocks the stems from absorbing water properly and causes flowers to wilt faster.
Before placing your bouquet in a vase, remove any leaves that would sit below the water line. Clean water helps keep your flowers healthy and hydrated.

2. Placing Flowers in Direct Sunlight or Heat
While flowers love light in nature, cut flowers actually prefer a cooler environment once they are in a vase.
Direct sunlight, heaters, or heat pumps can cause flowers to dehydrate quickly, making them wilt sooner. Excess heat also increases evaporation from the vase.
For the best results, place your flowers in a cool, shaded spot away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

3. Not Recutting the Stems Every Few Days
Over time, the ends of flower stems can seal or become blocked, reducing their ability to absorb water.
Recutting the stems every two to three days keeps them fresh and helps the flowers continue drinking properly.
Use sharp scissors or a knife and trim about 1–2 cm off each stem at a slight angle before returning them to clean water.

4. Placing Flowers Near Ripening Fruit
It may seem harmless to place your flowers beside a fruit bowl, but ripening fruit releases a natural gas called ethylene.
Ethylene speeds up the ageing process of flowers, causing them to wilt and fade much faster.
To help your bouquet last longer, keep it away from fruit bowls and other ripening produce.
