How to Care for Sunflowers at Home 🌻

Sunflowers bring an instant sense of joy to a space. With their golden petals and bold, uplifting energy, they have a way of brightening both a room and your mood. Whether you have received a bouquet as a gift or picked up a bunch to treat yourself, a little care goes a long way in keeping your sunflowers looking fresh and beautiful.

Here is how to get the very best out of your sunflowers at home.

Trim the stems properly

Use sharp scissors or a knife and trim about two centimetres off the bottom of each stem on a slight angle. This creates a clean surface that allows the flower to drink water more easily. If you notice the flowers starting to droop after a few days, trimming the stems again can often revive them.

Change the water regularly

Sunflowers are thirsty flowers and they do best with fresh water. Change the water every two days and give the vase a quick rinse each time. Refill it with clean, cool water and add more flower food if you have it. Keeping the water clear is one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your bouquet.

Keep them in the right spot

Sunflowers love light, but not direct heat. Place your bouquet somewhere bright but out of direct sunlight, away from heaters, fireplaces or hot windowsills. Too much heat causes them to wilt faster.

Remove any fading leaves or petals

As your sunflowers age, some leaves or outer petals may start to wilt. Gently remove these as they appear. This keeps the bouquet looking fresh and prevents bacteria from building up in the water.

Give them space

Sunflowers have large heads and sturdy stems, which means they like a little breathing room. Avoid overcrowding them in the vase so air can circulate and each stem can sit comfortably in the water.

Enjoy the natural change

One of the beautiful things about sunflowers is how they evolve over time. They may slowly open wider, soften in colour or gently droop as they age. This is all part of their charm and adds to their relaxed, natural feel in your home.

With just a little care, your sunflowers can stay bright and joyful for many days, filling your space with warmth, light and that unmistakable feeling of summer.

Sunflower season is here, and there is no better time to let a little sunshine live in your home 🌻
